Using the work of Robert Indiana as our inspiration, the second grade students created these love signs. Before class, I pre-cut letters from card stock using our die cutting press. We lightly taped them to the background paper so that the paint wouldn’t be able to seep under. The trick is getting the letters to stick, but not so much that they tear when removed. Using water activated tempera bricks, students painted over and around the letters until their pages were completely covered. Once they dried, we peeled the letters off and reveled the finished work. The painted letters were then attached to a solid background to create a contrasting effect.
