For this project, the fourth grade students were inspired by American artist Ellsworth Kelly. His work of botanical forms is created through a printmaking process called lithography. To mimic the look of his finished pieces (without the use of large lithography stones) we drew everything in black sharpie. We talked about how he was able to show us what he was drawing using only contour lines. He left out the surface details, resulting in large flat shapes. Since Austin is home to many kinds of cacti and succulents, we used those as our subjects.
