To tie into a jungle song that the first graders learned in music, we created these tigers.  We began class by reading The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau. It is the story of how the artist, at the age of 42, decided to dedicate his life to painting.  At first, the critics were unkind about his simple painting style.  In the end, however, he persevered and became one of France’s most beloved artists. Just like Rousseau, we imagined that we were in the jungle.  We drew our tigers with simplified shapes.  Some students chose to paint their tigers realistically, and other took a more colorful approach.
