Magic Milk

For their last art class of the school year, the 4K students became magicians.  They spent class creating magic potions to help them practice their color mixing skills.  The first ingredient for their potion was milk.  Each student had an aluminum pie pan filled about ¼ full.  Next, drops of food coloring were added.  To make the magic happen, they each receive a paint brush “wand” with our last secret ingredient on the tip: liquid dish soap.  When their brush touched the milk, it made the colors visually explode.  The chemical reaction that happens on the surface of the milk makes the food coloring move around in a tie-dye type way.   The more they moved their wands around, the more the colors mixed.
