The second grade students learned about artist Wayne Thiebaud and his colorful edible paintings. Taking inspiration from his gumball machines, we set to work on our own. We began by outlining in crayon. We talked about how Thiebaud often sketched his paintings with colorful outlines. After they had their outline, they filled in their machine with as many gumballs as they could. They flexed their creativity in pricing them ($100,000!), and colored everything in with tempera paint.
