Fauvist Portraits

3rd Grade_archive

The 3rd grade students created Fauvist self-portraits.  This type of painting emphasizes painterly qualities and strong color over realistic values.  I photographed each student in black and white and attached their picture to a 12×12 piece of white paper.  Then, we played “Pass the Paint”.  Working for 1 minute at a time, each student took a turn with their paint to fill in a portion of their photograph as well as make an abstract design in the background.  After the allotted time, the paints were passed clockwise around the table.  By the end, each student had used each paint color to cover their entire photograph and fill in the background.
