The 5th grade students made these paper mache birds in 3 steps. The first step was to build the armature (the skeleton) of the birds with water bottles, aluminum foil, and masking tape. We left the water in the bottles to help add stability. Step two was cover the armature with paper mache. The students could choose any solid or combination of colors to coat their bird. Step three was to add any final details with paint. For this portion of the project, they each started with the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and black and white. They spent class experimenting in color mixing until they were satisfied with their completed bird.
