We began class by reading There’s an Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer. Then, each student created their own alligator by paper weaving the body. Each student received a construction paper loom that doubled as the body, and chose 5 strips of colorful 1in x 8 in. pieces of paper. They wove each strip of paper through the body, making sure to go over-under the “weft” papers, and alternate each strip to create a checkerboard pattern. Once complete, they secured the ends with glue. The final step was to add details with oil pastels, then cut out and glue 4 legs.
