The third grade took inspiration from artist Jasper Johns to create these pop art words. They used a word that they associate with themselves (football, smart, Christian, etc.) as the subject. We started by folding a piece of paper into 8 equal rectangles. Then, we wrote our words in oil pastel so that each box got a letter. If the word was longer than 8 letters, they just wrote the letters that would fit. If it was shorter than 8, they repeated letters until all of the boxes were filled. Once the letters were written, we filled in the backgrounds with chalk pastels. We learned how to blend the pastels with our fingers so that all of the paper got covered.
