The first grade students began this project watching an animation of the story Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees. It is the story of a giraffe named Gerald who believes he is a terrible dancer. The other animals laugh at him until a kind cricket steps in. He shows Gerald that all he needs is the right music. We began by coloring our backgrounds. We used white, dark blue, light blue, and purple construction paper crayons to make the glowing moon. Then, we added shining stars and green grass. Next, we drew Gerald on a separate piece of yellow paper. The students were encouraged to get creative with their dance moves. Once they were finished, they cut out their giraffes and glued them to the background.
